A ruleset, not a realm
Forever has no realm list. You pick a ruleset, and each one is a large shared world of its own:

  • Normal: the standard game, with PvP when you choose it.
  • PvP: every trip into contested territory carries danger.
  • Roleplaying: for players who want to stay in character and find others who do.
  • Hardcore: one death ends a character’s run. It arrives some time after launch.

Who you can play with
Groups, dungeons and raids only work within one ruleset, and Horde and Alliance still can’t group. Battlegrounds can mix players from different rulesets, except Hardcore, which stays apart.

Characters can’t move between rulesets: to play on another one, you make a new character there. The exception is Hardcore: a Hardcore character who dies can transfer to another ruleset, PvP included.

On the PvP ruleset your account picks one faction. Once you make an Alliance character there, you can’t make a Horde one, and the other way round. Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore allow both. When PvP populations need balancing, Blizzard can for a time limit new characters on one faction, as it did in Season of Discovery.

What carries over
Collections and Legacy Points are shared across rulesets. Hardcore progress can carry out to other rulesets, but nothing from them carries into Hardcore.

To meet players who speak your language, set Preferred Online Language under Options, Languages and Social. It covers your whole account and can be changed once a day.
