The Forever Open is a one-on-one dueling tournament on the Forever beta, for new level 30 Horde characters on the PvP ruleset, on October 17 and 18. Tips Out organizes it, and Esfand and Xaryu host it; three years ago the same team ran the OTK Hardcore Mak’gora on Hardcore Classic, and more than 2,500 players signed up. Anyone with beta access can enter.

The prizes
The prize pool was $50,000 when the tournament was announced on September 27. The next day TimTheTatman put in another $50,000.

The champion is crowned Death’s Duelist. Players tied for their class’s best place split its prize. In Forever the Horde has all nine classes, since Undead can be Paladins.

How to enter
  1. Make a new Horde character on the beta’s PvP ruleset. Characters made before 11:00 a.m. PDT on September 27 are removed from the tournament.
  2. Give it the second name Foreverpvp: every Forever character has two names.
  3. Register it on the tournament hub before October 4, and join the tournament’s Discord.
  4. Ask for an invite to the tournament’s guild, The Forever Open: whisper an online admin (Admin Foreverpvp, Bog Foreverpvp, Prestige One, Admin Musashi or Magetea Foreverpvp), or post your character’s full name in the Discord’s guild-invite channel.
  5. Reach level 30 before check-in, and bring 15 gold for the entry fee.

You can register more than one character, each on its own, but at check-in you choose the one you’ll duel with, and the choice is final. The beta opened with a level cap of 20, which rises to 30 during the test.

Getting into the beta takes an opt-in on Blizzard’s Forever site, which doesn’t promise a place, or the Skyborne Epic Pack or Warcraft Forever Collection, which include it.

How it’s played
  • Qualifiers: every checked-in level 30 character that has paid the entry fee.
  • Finals: the top four of each class from the qualifiers, in a bracket of best-of-five duels.

Both days stream on Esfand’s and Xaryu’s Twitch channels, and anyone may co-stream them. Every competitor streams their own view on Twitch, YouTube or Kick and keeps the recording for the admins.

Rules that shape a character
  • One talent build per stage. You may have to submit it a day before each stage. The qualifiers and the finals can use different builds, but a build can’t change once its stage starts, and admins check talents, bags and the character panel on stream.
  • Legacy Points are allowed. Plan a character’s points in our Legacy calculator and its talents in our talent calculator.
  • Consumables are allowed, except Magic Dust, the Fire, Nature, Frost, Arcane, Holy and Shadow Protection Potions, and holiday buffs and treats such as the Wickerman buff or Candy Corn. A banned item can’t be equipped or carried in your bags, and the list can change at any time.
  • Buffs from other players are allowed only if they last 2 minutes or more, so no Power Word: Shield unless you’re a Priest.
  • Openers. No mounting. Duelists start 20 yards apart, 10 yards each side of the duel flag, and only a stealthed character may move before the duel begins, after the admins’ 10-second countdown. No opener is guaranteed for any class.
  • Staying put. Nobody leaves the dueling spot, not even to hearth and repair, and a player offline for more than 3 minutes in all is disqualified. Warlocks may leave once to gather Soul Shards, after checking in with an admin.
  • Between duels there are 1 to 2 minutes to heal, buff and drink. A duel that times out is fought again, with food and water capped at 3 for the rest of that matchup.
  • No stalling or fleeing. Stalling, such as a Rogue waiting in stealth for cooldowns to reset, forfeits the duel, and 60 seconds without acting brings a penalty and possible disqualification. Fleeing disqualifies a player, and so does forcing an opponent to flee, such as by chain-fearing them across the duel’s edge.
